The Unraveling of the Mind

Our focus as we gather to attend to God, ourselves and one another is the story of Jesus meeting legion among the tombs in Garasene (Mark 5:12-20). This man, tormented by "legion" lived among the tombs - isolated from community. Jesus, a suffering messiah himself, meets people in their suffering with power and abundance. The irony is that while Jesus brings healing and restoration to this man's "unraveled mind" the townspeople don't join the celebration. In fact, they are so disturbed by the prophet's power that they beg Jesus to leave and not come back. Jesus is also unraveling their status quo. Sadly, they do not trust God's abundance in the face of the inevitable unraveling that takes place when Jesus shows up. Where do you find yourself in this story? Identifying as the man among the tombs, tormented by legion whose power seems too much for you but not for Jesus? Or with the townspeople who are tired and fearful of all the disruption, begging Jesus to leave them alone. Or perhaps you are a bystander wondering what all this means (one of the disciples in the boat who don't say much in this story). In the end we are left with Jesus who both meets us in our unraveling and does his good share of unraveling in us. Will we trust him?
